Ordering of Words in a Sentence

Verbal Ability Ordering of Words in a Sentence

Build natural English word order using grammar, collocation, and emphasis.

What does “ordering of words” mean?

In English, typical word order is S–V–O (Subject–Verb–Object), followed by modifiers (place, time, manner) in conventional slots. Reordering must still respect grammar, collocation, and information flow.

Pattern Rule of Thumb Example
Core order Subject → Verb → Object/Complement She wrote a report.
Time/Place Place usually before time: Place → Time She met me at the café yesterday.
Manner Manner adverbs follow the verb/object They answered the question politely.
Opinion–Size–Age–Color–Noun Adjective stack order (OSASCOMP) a lovely small old wooden table
Frequency Frequency adverbs before main verb (after “be”) She usually arrives early. / She is often late.
Focus New/important info tends to the end We announced the results this morning.

“If several orders seem okay, choose the one native writers actually use with that collocation.”

Usage Tip
Key points
  • Respect S–V–O and verb complementation.
  • Use conventional modifier order (Place → Time; OSASCOMP for adjectives).
  • Keep collocations together (make a decision, take a risk).
  • Prefer natural information flow (given → new).

Common Errors

Error Type Awkward / Wrong Natural Order / Why
Adverb position They quickly the issue solved. They quickly solved the issue. (adv. before main verb or after object)
Place/Time We will meet tomorrow at the library. We will meet at the library tomorrow. (Place → Time)
Adj. stacking a wooden old small table a small old wooden table. (OSASCOMP)
Split collocation Take carefully a decision. Make a decision carefully. (keep collocation intact)

Check verb patterns (e.g., “advise someone to do”, “insist on doing”).

Word order illustration
Core: S–V–O → Place → Time; adjectives follow OSASCOMP; adverbs avoid breaking collocations.
Mini Reference
  • OSASCOMP: Opinion, Size, Age, Shape, Color, Origin, Material, Purpose + Noun
  • Adverbs: frequency (often) before main verb; manner (carefully) after verb/object
  • Place/Time: Usually place before time for neutral style
  • Focus: New/important info tends to the end

Deviations are possible for emphasis, but test against natural usage.
